Seventeen students from the TeachHer Initiative participated in a special science camp encouraging the study of science, technology, engineering, arts/design and mathematics (STEAM careers).
This science camp took students to Ad Astra Rocket Lab and the Science Corner – the U.S. Embassy space at EARTH University in Liberia- where they learned about the development, impact and importance of the growing aerospace industry in Costa Rica; as well as the importance of innovation, and entrepreneurship.
TeachHer is a worldwide initiative inspiring adolescents to pursue STEAM careers, and this provided students an opportunity to learn more about the academic and professionals opportunities related to these careers.
U.S. Ambassador Sharon Day, First Lady Mercedes Penas and President Luis Guillermo Solis accompanied students from Poas high school during their visit to Liberia.
Liceo Poas is one of the high schools that are part of TeachHer in Costa Rica, the program that was launched in Paris on June 2016 by then U.S. Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden and UNESCO Director Irina Bokova. Costa Rican First Lady Mercedes Penas joined them in Paris, and Costa Rica became one of the few countries to pilot the initiative in Latin America.
The other six high schools that are part of TeachHer in Costa Rica are as follows:
- Colegio Técnico Profesional Hojancha
- Liceo del Roble de Alajuela
- Colegio San José de la Montaña
- Liceo Experimental de Naranjo
