Who We Are: The Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) is the lead foreign affairs agency in the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The San José Office of Agricultural Affairs (OAA) is a regional office, supervising staff and managing programs in Nicaragua and Panama as well as in Costa Rica.
What We Do: FAS promotes U.S. agricultural interests and world food security. The Agency’s strategic goal is to “Increase U.S. food and agricultural exports to $175 billion by end-year 2016, resulting in $89 billion of additional economic activity, through market development programs, trade shows, prevention/ resolution of market access issues, trade capacity building, and market-expanding trade agreements.”
FAS’ principal duties include agricultural trade policy, market development and exporter assistance, data and analysis, and international development.
