4 MINUTE READ
April 11, 2024

The Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Caja Costarricense del Seguro Social (CCSS) have begun an investigation into a potential outbreak of Bordetella pertussis (whooping cough) in the district of Tibas, following a confirmed case in a 16-year-old. Given the contagious nature of whooping cough and its severity in children and unvaccinated populations, the U.S. Embassy urges heightened awareness and vaccination verification for U.S. citizens in Costa Rica.
Details of the Outbreak:

  • A family and close contacts in Tibas are under examination after a 16-year-old tested positive for whooping cough.
  • Whooping cough is a highly communicable disease that can lead to severe coughing fits, fever, nasal congestion, and apnea (breathing pause).
  • It is particularly dangerous for unvaccinated individuals and children.
  • Transmission is through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

Health Advisory:
The following measures are recommended to prevent the spread of whooping cough:• Ensure vaccination schedules are up to date.

  • Seek professional medical guidance on an appropriate vaccination program.
  • Adhere to cough and sneeze etiquette.
  • Practice frequent hand washing with soap and water.
  • Avoid poorly ventilated or crowded spaces.
  • Continue breastfeeding, as it offers protective benefits to infants.
  • Seek medical advice if symptoms related to whooping cough are experienced.

Action:

  • U.S. citizens should verify their vaccination status and receive necessary updates.
  • Any individual displaying symptoms of whooping cough should contact their health care provider or local EBAIS (if appropriate) immediately.
